I seen it mentioned on R/C Tech, and followed up by downloading the manuals, but there is a difference in final drive ratios depending on whether you are using the gear diff (2.75:1), or ball diff (2.6:1).
Doing the math, that shows that the ball diff has 52 teeth, and the gear diff, 55.
Strange.

I've never seen any discussion about why they chose to do that, I found it a little odd too.

There is no differences... Same tooth count and same diameter. and completely interchangeable in the same trans case.
Not sure how they got to that in the first place.
